2021 - Adjusting to the COVID World

 2021

It's hard to know where to start on describing 2021 as it was a year of managing COVID and so many other unexpected things.

  • Karl retired from Nelson Labs in March 2021 after working ther for over 10 years.  He got a part time job at Alpine Business supplies and is enjoying working there a few hours a day.
  • Birthday shopping trips with the grands was somewhat back to normal - some mall/target shopping and eating out like in previous years and we made it work.
  • Getting vaccinated for COVID was a big thing - I got my first shot in January and the second in February.  Karl got his in February and the second in March.  Haley, Karl, and I got our boosters in the fall.
  • My sister Jackie was in the hospital for 8 days due to COVID - in ICU for some of that time.

Family

Should have been published in Summer 2015

Karl and I have been a couple for over 40 years - married for almost 39.  Yes, we are getting up there in years of marriage and years in age.  It's been an interesting life together filled with ups and downs and agreements and disagreements good and not so good.  But, we've hung in there and made our marriage work and made it happy.

Today at the end of our Sunday sacrament meeting everyone received a copy of the Proclamation of the Family.  In paragraph six it states that as a couple and heads of our family we have a solemn responsibility to love and care for each other and for our children and that we have a sacred duty to rear our children in love and righteousness, to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, and to teach them to love and serve one another, observe the commandments of God, and be law-abiding citizens wherever they live and that we will be held accountable before God for the discharge of these obligations.

We (Petersen family) are very blessed!!  So far this year, we are healthy and have been free from major illness and unexpected events.  All in the family who can work are gainfully employed.  We continue to be a family of believers through our commitment to live the gospel of Jesus Christ. We've had Sunday dinners and celebrated at least one birthday. The kids are going to to school (face-to-face) and everyone seems to be happy and doing okay.

Add one more college graduate to the family!

Willie graduated from the University of Utah with a B.S., Accounting at the end of fall semester, December 2018, suma cum laude,by the way.  He'll participate in graduation events this week on Thursday, May 2 and Friday, May 4.  He began his tenure at the U in the fall of 2013 after high school graduation.  Winter 2014 brought about a new experience, called to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Baltic State of Lithuania, Lithuanian speaking.  Upon return home in March 2016, he got a job working at Cyprus Credit Union and spent the spring and summer reconnecting with friends and a more temporal life style.  He started back at the U fall 2016 as a Business Scholar, an amazing college transition program associated with the David Eccles School of Business at the U.  Over the course of the next two years he was very involved in the Business Scholars (or the b-schols as we know it) program which included a trip to Seattle, a summer experience to Scandinavia, a fall trip to Atlanta, a spring trip to Guatemala, and other amazing experiences.  He managed to get a job as a peer adviser for the College of Business which has worked out to be a pretty decent part time job.

Eventually, Willie landed on accounting as a major and mapped out a pathway to a big four accounting firm internship at Deloitte Teusch during spring semester this year.  At the conclusion of the internship, he was offered a position with Deloitte Teusch and will begin working there upon completion of a masters of accounting 2019-2020.  Phew!!!  Needless to say, Karl and I and the whole family are very proud of Willie Petersen!!

Hold on for what's next!

As a graduation present of sorts, Willie is headed away for a month to travel the world.  From May 4 - 12, he be leading a trip of Business Scholars students and staff through Central Europe - Budapest, Hungary; Krakow, Poland; and, Prague, Czech Republic.  On May 11, nephew/cousin, Parker Wood will meet up with Willie

In the spring, of 2018, Willie met Danielle Ashby.  Their friendship has progressed over the year to be ready to commit their lives to each other and plan to be married on June 29, 2019. Exciting times ahead.  Danielle is a graduate of BYU and teaches dance and yoga at Viewmont High School is Davis School District.  We are excited to have her in our family.

It's a New Year

Excited for a new year, 2019 is certainly going to be one for the record books.  I have set a goal to write a personal history this year.  I've read a few of the personal histories of my ancestors in the past week, and sadly, they were written by distant relatives.  I want my kids and grandchildren to know me through my own words.

Haley gave me the quote below framed and ready to go on a wall in my home.  I love it!

Fall Report

It's been 7 months or so since I last reported out to the blog world.  I look back on that time and think about the craziness of my world.  My life is definitely on fast forward and clipping along more quickly than I can keep up.  And, it's a good life!

So what keeps me going?  Well . . . . . . . .

I am a mom, grandma, wife, and daughter and such roles and associated responsibilities are at the top of my priority list.

I am a working mom, grandma, wife, and daughter so that means in addition to family time I spend more hours I can report working with students, staff, and others to hopefully make their lives better.

I am a churchgoing, working mom, grandma, wife, and daughter so that means in addition to family time and working more hours than I can report, I gladly devote time serving others in my LDS ward and stake.

My Life - not in any size or color priority.

I'm Back!

Hello Blog World,
It's been forever ago that I posted an update to the virtual world of blogging.  I can't promise a miracle or anything like that, but I am going to start sharing things now and again.  I have missed out on capturing the spontaneous for a few months, but I am ready to get back into full participation.

I need to let you know that my family member and I are alive and well and moving forward in the world. It's a great time to be a family with so many things to connect with and enjoy.

Happy Anniversary #40? Where did the time go?

Well blog readers, today is September 1, 2016.  Forty years ago today, 9:00 a.m., Karl and I were married/sealed by Bro. John Sipkema in the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  It was a beautiful day, a Wednesday.  Following the temple ceremony, we did the picture thing around the temple grounds, we had a nice wedding luncheon at the Lion House and greeted guests at a reception that night also at the Lion House.

We honeymooned in San Francisco and it was then that I knew how much Karl really loved me.  We hit all of the touristy spots and on a drive near the bay we stopped at a red light and Karl told me to jump out of the car and take a picture.  I obeyed and took the picture.  As I turned to walk back to the car, the light changed and there I stood, stranded on a street corner in San Francisco with only a camera in hand.  Didn't know what to do or where to go or what to do - no cell phones.  I started walking in the direction Karl was headed, hoping he would turnaround or stop or something and come to find me.  Some time later, I saw him at a distance down this lonely street walking toward me. He did come back for me!!  From that day on, I knew  . . . . . . . .

Oh my goodness!

When my parents celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary, we had a party at TGI Friday's on Foothill Drive.  I thought they were so old.  And, never did I think that Karl and I would someday arrive at the forty year milestone.

Well, we are now hear and no worse for wear.  It's certainly a different perspective now.  The days in the future are significantly fewer than those in the past and I couldn't be more blessed.  Our family began with two and now there are twelve.  We have had an amazing journey and look forward to the future with optimism and excitement for things yet to come.

One of these days, I hope to write about some of the ups and downs, the highs and lows of 40 years together for all the blog world to read.  But for now, just know that I love my family - Karl, Annie, Haley, Willie, Ross, James, Elliott, Wyatt, Molly, Jack and Quin.  I love Sunday dinners, Grandma Camp, hanging out, talking, laughing, celebrating birthdays and holidays, Disneyland, church, helping others, watching basketball games, trips to McDonalds (Diet Coke central), and pretty much anything that includes any one or all of the people mentioned above.

Home a month and all is well!

So my sweet son is home safe and sound from the land of Lietuva.  He is healthy and strong and on his way to taking steps and making plans for the future.

Returning home from missionary services, two year away from the USA, requires visiting the dentist, the doctor, the dermatologist and more.  It means getting reinstated at the U, meeting with an adviser and facing the most difficult challenge of finding a job.  In the middle of all the doing it also means going through your room from top to bottom and trying to find missing clothes and shoes and basketball shorts.

The most important thing is that Willie served strong and hard from the beginning to the end.  He came home an experienced young man ready for the next steps necessary to shape his future to be the best ever.

Love him!

I spared Karl's life -----

So it's difficult to get to sleep on Sunday nights because I am so excited to get the Monday morning email from my missionary son, Elder Petersen.  He is close to the finish line as far as missionary service goes and I can't wait for his return.

We received an email from the mission president some weeks ago that Willie's return date is March 3, 2016.  I figured we would get his travel plans about a month ahead and we have been speculating on travel itinerary and time of arrival for a few weeks now.  On Sunday night, I emailed the mission secretary, Sister Anderson, and asked about travel plans.  I wrestled with sleep all night and finally got up at 4:00 a.m. for so to check my email.  Needless to say, early Monday morning, 4:46 a.m., came a reply to my request from Sister Anderson with a copy of the travel itinerary.  Excited beyond description, I got back in bed and excitedly told Karl that the travel plans had arrived.  He rolled over to tell me that he got them a few days ago!  What!  Travel plans were sent and he said NOTHING to me about them!!!!  I was so upset that I slugged him hard and made him get up, go to the computer, and forward me the email he had been sent.  Arggggggg!!!!!!

After a few days in the dog house, I was able to forgive him and I spared his life, once again.  He obviously had no idea how important that little bit of information was to me.

Elder Petersen will leave Riga, Latvia around 7:30 a.m., Thursday, March 3, 2016.  He will travel from Riga to Amsterdam, Amsterdam to Minneapolis/St. Paul, and then from Minneapolis/St. Paul to Salt Lake City.  Oh what a joyous day it will be.

My mother's magnet collection . . . .

You can tell a lot about people by the kinds of magnets they put on their refrigerators.  Just before the holidays, sometime in mid-November, my sisters and I gathered to do the pre-holiday cleaning at my parents home.  Dad is pretty much a minimalist and can get by with very little.  Mom on the other hand loved stuff!  Each time we do a deep cleaning, Dad has us get rid of a few more things.

My responsibility this go around was the kitchen.  I started at one end with my cleaning supplies and followed the perimeter of the kitchen.  When I got to the refrigerator, I took all of the magnets off so I could wipe it down. It was easy to see that each one represented something important to my mother. Rather then toss them away, I decided to reorganize and this is the result.

You can see for yourself the variety of magnets and that really do tell an interesting story of mom's interests and loves - from Disneyland to the University of Utah, the Pledge of Allegiance to pandas and hummingbirds.  She visited many of the places represented by the magnets vicariously - Washington DC, France, Russia, Switzerland and West Virginia.  Mom loved music and if you mentioned a random word, she had a song to go with it.  I think Christmas was her favorite holiday and Yellowstone was a favorite place to go for a long drive.  She was proud to be an American and was pretty much addicted to Diet Coke.  All of these things are represented on the fridge.

On the side of the fridge were some of her "hand-made" magnets with messages that she probably got from a Relief Society lesson or something at church.  These magnets were not to be cluttered among the others because they represented her faith and love and commitment to family.

What's on your fridge?

Just a week from today . . . . .

Christmas is just a week from today.  This has been a different Christmas year for Karl and me and the kids and grand kids.  I decided awhile back that I wanted to redo my kitchen and dining area.  We have lived in our home for a little over 16 years and some things like the tile and cabinets had begun to show their age.  I stumbled upon a newspaper add/photo that represented what I wanted to do and moved forward from there. So, I talked with two cabinet companies and ended up choosing Chris and Dicks for the cabinet purchase and my design.

In the past month, and with a lot of help from Karl, my new kitchen and dining area are nearly finished. If all goes well, counter tops will be installed sometime next week just in time for Christmas.

So, with the dysfunction and confusion that comes from remodeling, my Christmas preparation and decoration has taken on a simpler look and feel.  It's been interesting to say the least.  I hope to have my tree up on Christmas Eve and put the presents out then.  I have some cooking I'd like to do for my family, but I have decided we can eat out instead, and that will be fine.  I haven't done near the shopping and fretting over Christmas like I usually do, and that's been okay, too.

I will forever remember this holiday season as the one in which I turned a corner -- coming to terms with delegating and sharing. Thanksgiving was held at Annie's - just our Petersen, Howden, Binggeli family.  I missed not seeing all of our extended Huber and Petersen family members, but for the first time in many, many years I took on a more supportive role in Thanksgiving festivities.

There are more changes/adjustments for family Christmas celebrations, and I know everything will work out well.  I am so looking forward to a few days off and some time to chill with family.  An added bonus will definitely be skyping with Elder Petersen and having everyone for breakfast at my house (keep your fingers crossed on the counter top installation and hooking up the sink and dishwasher) on Christmas morning.

I would like to send a Christmas message to any and all who read my blog.  I heard the poem below read a few years ago.  I liked it then and like it now.

Merry Christmas!!

My Christmas Wish for You
By Ruth Kephart

My Christmas wish for you, friend
Is not a simple one
For I wish you hope and joy and peace
Days filled with warmth and sun.

I wish you love and friendship, too
Throughout the coming year
Lots of laughter and happiness
To fill your world with cheer.

May you count your blessings, one by one
And when totaled by the lot
May you find all you’ve been given
To be more than what you sought.

May your journeys be short, your burdens light
May your spirit never grow old,
May all your clouds have silver linings
And your rainbows pots of gold

I wish you this and so much more
May all your dreams come true,
May you have a Merry Christmas, friend

And a Happy New Year, too . . . .

It's Official! 100 Days!!

Karl and I got an email on Friday, November 20, from the Baltic States Mission President to inform us that our sweet son will return home on March 3, 2016!!!!

Oh my goodness!  I am so very excited for that great day, now just 100 days from today, November 24, 2016.

I must admit that having a missionary in the family has been the most incredible experience of a lifetime for him and all of us. But, all good and powerful experiences eventually come to at least a temporary end, and when that day comes, we will greet Elder Petersen with open arms, and smiles and tears of joy and happiness.  We are so very blessed by his service yet so excited to see where his next adventure will be.

Tomorrow - double digit countdown begins . . . . . .

Coming up on "100 days" to go!

Greetings blog world!

In looking at the calendar today, if my calculations are somewhat accurate, it should be about 100 days until I can say, "mission accomplished" and welcome home that long lost son of mine at last.

There is nothing I have done in my life or ever will do that has required so much faith in what this church of our is all about.  I said before and I will say it forever, a demonstration of my faith in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is evidenced through my unwavering willingness and never-ending support in sending a my young son away from home for two long years to share the light of Christ and a message of hope to any and all who will listen.

When Karl, Haley and I dropped Willie off in Provo, Utah, February 26, 2014, 12:52 p.m., I thought the day of return would never, ever come.  I am pleased to report that the two years will come to an end and I will have that son of mine home again in just over 100 days.  I can do that!  I will make it! The end is in sight!

Birthday, again!

So it's my very own birthday today.  I am getting up there . . . . . 61!  Can you believe it?  I can't!  I am not sure what 61 is suppose to feel like, but I feel pretty good.

So what is there to celebrate about being 61?  Well, let me see . . . .
  • I have a good life - not rich and famous by any means, but I am rich in family, friends and neighbors.  Let's see . . . there's Karl who takes pretty good care of me  . . . he does the wash and takes care of the yard work (not many around who get that kind of support).  He's my first assistant with projects for family, work and church, and he will do whatever at the drop of a hat (but I must admit he does need a nudge now and then). He's the best dad any kid could ask for and could be rated as a top grandpa if he could just recognize that the children who come to visit are his grandchildren and not his children
  • I have been blessed with three children who are strong, good looking and above average in so many ways.  All three are accomplished at something I gave them - the talent or capacity for which they can forever thank me. Annie is my #1 and that means chief family boss.  She is more creative and artistic in words and actions than anyone I know.  She can cook and sew and write and design and manage a home of boys.  She has good taste in everything and she is rock solid in all she does. Haley is my #2 and with that birth order rank comes commitment and obligation. She has always been my "Haley on the spot."  She is so musically talented at the piano and with the guitar and banjo and can tackle the most difficult math problem or life circumstance with success and confidence. She is always the champion of a good cause and always has a political or social opinion to share.  Willie is #3 and the youngest.  I must say that he is the recipient of many things his sisters didn't get or experience, but rest assured, he missed out on a lot of early Petersen family adventures and activities.  He is amazing in every definition of the word. This one and only son came into our family as the caboose and has been the recipient of love, and more love than can be imagined.  He is strong and handsome and funny and crazy and has friends and followers of all nationalities and backgrounds.  He's like the pied piper.  He loves to sing and play the ukulele, knows a few tunes on the piano and he is a basketball junkie.
  • I have been blessed with two amazing sons-in-law who have been sealed to my daughters for time and all eternity in the House of the Lord.  They are also strong, good looking, educated, dedicated and make me a very proud mother-in-law.  Ross and James are helpful and handy and willing to take on my weird requests like building a block wall and patio at great-grandpa's house and humoring me when I give their children more candy and sugar than they'd like them to have.
  • I have these five additional people in my world I call grandchildren.  They are simply mini-versions of their parents and they are delightful!!!  They are called grandchildren for a reason - they are splendidly pleasing and impressively amazing!  I love them to the moon and back!
  • I have a very nice home - not a mansion with all the bells and whistles of modern technology, but a home that is comfortable and welcoming.  The door is always open, and  . . .  always . . . drinks in the fridge, food in the pantry, candy in the candy dishes and ice cream in the freezer. My yard is beautiful - lawn is green an most flowers grow.
  • I call my work an extension of my life.  I love what I do duing the "work day" and the best part of all is that I get paid for it
  • I believe that there is Heavenly Father who created this world of ours through His son.  I know he loves all of his earthly children and has blessed me and my family above and beyond in so many ways.  I thank Him daily and worship Him on Sundays.  I am not a religious scholar nor do I profess to have read and studied all there is to learn about His church.  But, I am a believer and the strength of my faith is evidenced through my willingness and (nearly worry-free) commitment to send my young son some 6,000 miles away from me, and all who love him so much, for two (2) years to serve Him and share the message of hope and light of Christ to any and all who choose to listen.
Well, there you have it!  My bullet list of reasons to celebrate this birthday, #61!  Pretty good life I have been blessed with!  Happy Birthday, me!

Happy Anniversary

So what do people do when they celebrate 39 years of marriage?  When you don't know, you can always Google!

The 39 year Anniversary Facts and Figures

On the 39th anniversary of your marriage you would have been married for 14,235 days or 341,640 hours or 20,498,400 minutes which is over 1,229 million seconds!  During this time you would have shared, on average, over 106,700 hours of snuggle time (sleeping!) or about 12 years, 2 months; assuming you don’t work together you’ve been apart for over 82,461 hours which is about 9 years, 5 months. You would have by now shared about 31,100 meals together which equates to approximately 2 years, 1 months of continuous eating!

According to the website, lace is the modern theme for 39th wedding anniversary gifts.
Well, enough of all that.

So back to my initial question, what do people do when they celebrate 39 years of marriage?  Well for us, we ventured out to dinner Monday night at Ruth's Diner in Emigration Canyon.  We were seated outside on the patio and enjoyed a yummy dinner (yes I know it is a do not eat out week for the Healthy Living Challenge but anniversaries only come once a year) and live music.  A beautiful young guitarist/vocalist and her dad guitarist/vocalist performed some folksy tunes for the diner quests.  It was very relaxing and made for a very nice evening. The cool canyon air was crisp, pine-scented and fall-like. When we got back home, I ran a few errands and Karl payed bills.

So there you have it a 39th year anniversary celebration.  Maybe for our 40th anniversary we will make it to Niagara Falls and Karl will give me a ruby something, or not, and that's just fine.
