The Best Christmas Present Ever!

The very best Christmas present I ever received came 5 days after Christmas in the form of a squishy, gooey, hairless baby boy!  He was born a little after 12:00 noon on Friday, December 30, 1994, 7 pounds 7 ounces and 21 inches long. He has brought joy (emotion of good fortune and a source of delight) and happiness (pleasurable and satisfying experience) to our family now for 18 years -- it's his birthday today!

Fast forward to 2012 -- that little boy has become a pretty amazing young man.  He sings in the shower, reads his scriptures every night, says "please, thank you, may I be excused, and I love my Mom," all the time.

He giggles at crazy television shows that sometimes move him off the couch and on the floor with out-of-control laughter. He dresses up in weird costumes; wears manatee and Sasquatch socks in basketball games, and more.

There is not a day that goes by without a goodnight hug.  Happy Birthday, Willie!

Back to Back Games not a Great Idea

Wolverine basketball is up and going and the team is looking pretty good.  However, a good win on Thursday led to an unfortunate loss on Friday.  Some of our players just ran out of gas; others didn't have any in the beginning.  So, the season is 2-2 which is still pretty good.

I love basketball -- it is one of many favorite family activities (watching, that is for me playing for others).  At last night's game we had a little t-shirt stand set up by the basketball team booster club (so far we have only a few members and three of them are under age 5).  My amazing assistants/saleskids were at my side when I took my turn.  It's just how our family operates.  Whatever the event, the job, the activity, we are all in it together and it's fun.  The grandchillins are falling into the routine of being involved and doing things and having fun.  It's great.  Willie's fan club includes all of the Petersen clan and Cindy and Parker and Emily.  Sixteen games to go!

Count your blessings!

White Christmas is one of my all-time favorite movies!  The story line, the music, the vintage time-period, the actors, and everything about it I like.  It is truly a classic in my opinion.

I love a Rosemary Clooney -- her deep raspy alto voice, the deliberate and intentional way she delivers a song . . .

There is a theme song throughout the movie -- Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep!
It's time to listen to it again (and all of the other songs in the movie).  It's listening to good old stuff!

I love December!

I love December for so many reasons.  Basketball gets into full swing and the Hunter Wolverines and the Runnin' Utes are looking good.  I love snowstorms and winter and and hot chocolate and gathering in my home with family.  I love the colors of Christmas -- reds and greens are complimentary and rightly so.  I love the feel of excitement for Santa and all that it involves.  I love the special, subtle, tender spirit that abounds everywhere as people prepare in their personal and unique ways to celebrate what they choose during the month. I love the music; the melodies are familiar and the words inspiring. I love that December brings another year to a close and presents a perfect opportunity to reflect on expereinces, accomplishments, successes, and disappointments in preparation for new opportunities that come with a new year.

Give Thanks!

I have been back and forth across the country three times in the last 6 weeks.  It's been a little crazy (and exhausting) for me and my family.  But, as with everything, it's important to keep moving forward and make the very most of every situation that comes along.

At one meeting, I sat across the table from April, a young 30 something professional who works for the College Board.  During a break we began talking about Thanksgiving.  The course of the conversation turned toward family and somehow my very big family was disclosed (people are always so fascinated by our big families in Utah).  Once that number was identified, her next question was literally, "Tell me about Thanksgiving dinner!"  She and I talked for some time about getting all the family seated and eating a nice thanksgiving dinner -- how we managed it all and what it was like and how much fun it was. She wanted to know all of the details!  What did we talk about, what did we do?

Thanksgiving at Mom's 2009

April has as small family.  Her only brother and parents are deceased.  She has two nephews who live with their mother in New York City (she lives in Baltimore).  Her plans for Thanksgiving were tentative -- a small gathering with a few family members in New York.  She shared how when and if she got married that she wanted a big family and big celebrations for Thanksgiving.  We ended our conversation with well wishes and moved on.

We are so blessed (the Hubers and the Petersens) to have family by the tens and thirties and fifties!  At Quinn's baby blessing a few weeks back.  One of the sisters in the Howden's ward shared a sweet testimony highlighting the amazing family network that had gathered together to support Quinn.  She described the feeling of love and support that filled the chapel that day was likely because of Quinn.

It's true!  Our family is amazing (58 Hubers, 34 Petersens, and more on the way).  As far as I know, we love each other and care for each other, wow! At this time of year, it is so very nice to get together and enjoy the company and feel the love and support of family.  How blessed we are to have such an amazing breadth of support in our family.  I give thanks every day for all of them!  They are truly the best part of my existence on this earth.

Made it to Rice Eccles after all!

So Willie's football goal at the beginning of the season was for his team to make it to the "turf" at Rice Eccles Stadium on the U of U campus.  Well, the team didn't quite make it although they had a darn good season, but Willie will be there Friday afternoon to be recognized as an Academic All-State Football Player.  He reports to the 5A championship game and will be recognized with other guys at half-time.  Pretty cool!

I expect a full report and some pictures.  I hope he remembers to wear his letterman's jacket and stands up straight and tall.

Happy Birthday, Karl

Happy Birthday, Karl!  It's the first time in 36 years that I haven't been with you on your birthday :(  Those 36 years have been pretty good for the most part.
So sorry!  But, I am sure you have had a great day.

I know the kids and the grandchillins are taking good care of you -- they always do.  Dinner at Hires is a nice way to celebrate.

You are a great dad and grandpa and a pretty good husband, too. All of the grandsons think you are pretty cool, but for some reason, Molly can only tell you to "go away Grandpa."  Just give her time and  she will love you like the other kids.  Hope you've had a great day!

Happy Birthday, Parker!

If I had another child it would be a son and his name would be Parker.  Today is his birthday; not just any birthday but #16!  Parker is an amazing young man and he makes me smile and giggle and laugh so hard that sometimes . . . .

Parker is always welcome at my home, and I love his visits.  He is always doing and saying things that are sometimes on the edge of totally making me crazy, and I love him. I am so blessed that he is my nephew!

Happy Sweet 16 Birthday!

My Home, My Family -- Priceless and Practically Perfect in Every Way

So, it's Sunday morning and another beautiful fall day.  We are refinancing our home to a lower interest rate and fewer years to pay it off and that requires an appraisal.  The appraisal person came by on Thursday, walked through our house and took pictures and measurements and asked about improvements in the past few years to get the highest appraisal, possible.  Hmmm . . . . improvements since we moved into our Hunter home?  Something to think about -- the built-ins in the office, new paint and new carpet, the pergola over the patio, a nice vinyl fence, . . .

Well, that question got me thinking (yes, I do think on occasion). I dropped off a gift basket on the porch of a friend yesterday afternoon.  She lives at the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon in a very nice home in a well-kept, upper middle-class neighborhood with large trees, beautifully manicured yards, and so on.  Mind you, I have no criticism at all of the home, the neighborhood, etc.; my thoughts were more about how the homes would appraise for more than mine although my beautiful home has about the same square footage, well-kept yard, etc., but in a different neighborhood where people's incomes, professions, and priorities are not as obvious in where they live or the size of their homes.

So, back to the questions posed to me by the appraiser about improvements since we moved into our home 13 years ago.  Let's start with the growth and development of three amazing children all of whom have maintained their nice, healthy and strong, smart spirits during the time we have called our house "home" - improvements! Let's go on with a very good dad/husband who has taken up doing the wash and yard work and completely changed his work with additional education this past years while serving in YM leadership, priesthood group leadership, scouts, Stake sports/activity leader, and assistant to me, the boss of the house, in everything I do with family, church, and work - improvements! Can't leave out 2 amazing sons-in-law which meant 2 temple marriages and wedding celebrations to go along with them - improvements!  Think about the preparation and cooking for Sunday dinners (670+), birthday celebrations (too many to count), Christmas parties -- and all of the conversations and activities that ensue. Also, add in planning and discussion for family trips to Disneyland, Yellowstone -- improvement!  Add in all of the homework and studying for junior high, high school, college courses, church lessons, talks, and callings are also for improvement! Then consider the work and collaboration needed for an honor student, athlete, Eagle Scout and SBO president -- improvements! At last, the grand improvements have come along the way -- Elliott, Wyatt, Molly, Jack, and Quinn!

I could go on but only with annoying emphasis.  The point to all of this is that you are who you are regardless of a home's appraisal; and, in my opinion, the improvements that occur in a home are not so much about physical, tangible improvements but so much more about the intrinsic and extrinsic improvements made by those who live therein.  In that case, my home and my family are priceless and practically perfect in every way . . . and appraise at invaluable levels.  The End.

Region 2 Champs-Hunter 35 Viewmont 0

Well, they did it!  The HHS Wolverines went undefeated in Region 2 play and are now ready for the 5A State Playoffs.  The boys (and coaches) have had a great season and I don't think they have played any game at full potential.  It will be fun to watch them in the playoffs to see what they can do!  The last region game Wednesday, Oct. 17 (35 to 0 over Viewmont) was senior night -- the game when senior players and their parents walk out on the field and get the spotlight for a few minutes.  Well the boys were introduced in jersey number order #1-#88.  Willis is #74 and was second to the last.  Each senior player had a few seconds of their favorite song played and then a few words were stated about each.  My son never ceases to amaze me (and everyone else).  He ran to mid field as his song began to play (Mariah Carey, "Fantasy"), made some weird pose, and then did some goofy dance moves before running through the player "high five, low five" line.  Yes, he is a wild and crazy boy!

It was an exciting night and the players, their families, friends, and others had a great time!  Playoffs begin on Friday, Oct. 25, and Hunter has home field advantage!

Winning Team -- Hunter 38 Taylorsville 13

It was one of those games where the players and the spectators just couldn't get excited about what was happening on the field.  It was kind of pathetic in a way. Taylorsville is just a 1 win team this season and the football team just didn't have much to show vs. the HHS Wolverines.  The best part of the game is that HHS is pretty much the outright Region 2 Champions.  Just one game left in the regular season and then on to the state 5A playoffs!

Winning Team - Hunter 21 Kearns 20

Long sleeve white shirt lasted only through the first half -- it was not that helpful in making for a great game!
This game was a nailbiter from the beginning!  HHS got scored first but then got down 20 to 7.  The team came back strong in the 4th qarter to seal the 1 point win!  It was a great game.  Kearns has some pretty big players and they owned our o-line for half the game.  But the drive and spirt came through in the second half for the win!

The team also got some great press in the D-News this week about all of the sets of brothers on the team!

This is why I like Hunter Football- The Haka

Winning Team -- Hunter 34 Granger 14

Yep - #74 is my Son!  Senior, Captain, Center, 2-Year O-Line Starter
What a week!  HHS Homecoming and all of the activites made for a very exciting but very demanding and busy week.  The highlight for the people who live in my house was the football game on Friday night and a sweet victory.

Homecoming Week!

Winning Team - Hunter 41 West 3

What a great night for a football game!  Hunter HS wolverines played in the middle of Salt Lake City at Salt Lake High School West (now some 122 years as a public high school).  The field and stands were decorated in black and red, but Hunter pretty much ruined the West High Homecoming 2012! (Follow the link for details.)

Our Hunter football team came onto the field in control of the game from the opening kickoff - scoring in the first 3 minutes!  It was a great game and I am so proud of the kids for keeping their behavior in check and playing a well orchestrated game (only two penalties).

On a sad note -- Hunter's #1 running back/fullback, Hyrum Purcell, went out of the game with a serious knee injury.  Hopefully, he'll be back soon -- he is amazing and the team needs him.

Happy Birthday, Mom

Mom would have been 82 last Thursday.  Oh, how I miss her!  I know others do, too.

I would love to see her face to tell her I have five (5) grandchildren.  She would start to cry and tell me how blessed I am.  She would want to hold my two new babies at the same time -- she would know they had just come from heaven and had probably been given a kiss on the cheek by a loved one in heaven before being born into our family.  Holding babies helped her feel close to heaven.  As the great grandchildren started to come into her family, she told me that "all of her grandchildren were 'great' not just the new generation".

I would love to watch her give Willie and Parker a bad time for making fun of their "old" parents.  She would shake her finger at them and tell them to be good "or else". (No one ever experienced "or else" that I'm aware, but it was not a good thing.)  She would be amazed at what handsome young men they are!

She would love to hear from her missionaries -- Eddie in the jungles of Samoa; Rubie in the desolate Russia's Siberia; and, Meranda in the desserts of Paraguay.

She would be proud of her college grads and college students -- all grandchildren (of age) have or are working on postsecondary degrees/certificates (Annie, Haley, Melinda, Maddie, Alex, Peter, Lauren, Meranda, Chloe with degrees/certificates and Preston, Rubie, Natalie, Eddie and Emily in progress).  Education was a top priority!

She would be glad to know I have a car with leather seats.  Oh, how she complained about riding in the Trooper and trying to slide into it on a cloth seat.

If still here, I know I would have gotten a phone call from her at 12:10 a.m. this past Sunday morning so she could scream with excitement about Utah's insane win over BYU.

We had a nice birthday remembrance for Mom on Sunday evening -- most of the family came to Dad/Grandpa's for cake and ice cream - it was nice -- white cake, white butter cream icing, with pink roses.

If something good has come from Mom's passing, it's been getting to know Dad in a close and tender way.  I don't know if he loves me like Mom did, but he's getting there and I love him.

Mom, whereever you are in heaven, please know that we miss you and will always remember your love for us and our love for you.

Losing Team -- Hunter Zip (0) Davis 23

Oh my!  What a game!  This week's football game was cursed from the beginning -- Parker lost in the sophomore class election; Marie Sharapova lost at the US Open; and . . . Hunter could not get their offense or defense going.  The kids appeared to me to have flat energy -- basically they didn't have the excitement and momentum like other weeks.  The game was filled with penalties, interceptions, and lost opportunities.  Had we not thrown interceptions and capitalized on a few Davis penalities the outcome may have been different.  I really think Davis is overrated -- not a top 5 team in the state.  Our kids actually handled them pretty well but not without some injuries -- knees, ankles, tail bones, pride, and more . . . .

This week Hunter has a bye.  That means a time to heal injuries and take time to sort through the offense and the defense to put a good game plan together for the next game -- Friday, September 21 @ West High.

On a positive note, the weather was absolutly beautiful -- perfect football game watching weather.  Willie had a strong cheering section and the studentbody showed up dressed for a "blackout" game.  It was fun!

Winning Team -- Hunter 23 West Jordan 21

It was a nail biter, but the HHS football team took the lead with "an only seconds on the clock touchdown."  West Jordan got the ball back, rushing to score, Trevon Johnson got an interception to seal the HHS win!

Key players this week were Hyrum Purcell and all of the other kids.  Way to go Hunter!

Losing Team -- Hunter 27 Skyview 45

HHS football team left Hunter @ 10:00 a.m. yesterday morning for an adventure-packed day-long game day experience.  I am only aware of some of the details -- Lewis Brothers Stages (no school bus); tour of USU football facilities; pre-game dinner at Angie's Diner in Logan; and, then the game vs. Skyview in Smithfield, Utah.

Well, the first part of the day obviously went better than the outcome of the game.  According to Coach Wood, Hunter's amazing offense moved the ball some 700 yards and with that impressive stat had two touchdowns called back (and without the #1 running back Hyrum Purcel -- knee injury).  The Hunter defense on the other hand, as good as the kids looked last week, they could NOT defend the pass and Skyview capitalized.  So, at the end of the day, we have only the final score to put a damper on an otherwise good day.  I must say that the officials were a little partial to Skyview; but, the kids should be able to play through the one-sided officiating.  Hopefully, the game prep focus this week will be improving the pass defense.

I must admit, with my limited football knowledge and understanding, Hunter has an amazing offense.  At at the center of that offense (literally) is my son #74.  Hunter's offensive line is strong and powerful.  If the quarterback can get the ball to the correct receiver/back, look out!

Winning Team -- Hunter 25 Layton 21

Hunter High School "Smash Mouth" Football
Good showing for the Hunter Wolverines in their football opener in at Layton High School.  Keys to the win:
  • Good kids
  • Good coaching
  • Strong offensive line (especially the center #74)
  • Strong defensive line and defensive players
  • Amazing running back, Hyrum Purcell
  • Excitement and enthusiasm
  • Accountability -- if players miss practice they don't dress and play
  • And more . . . . . .
I must say that it is the offense that scores the majority of the time in football.  And, with that offense there are two players who must touch the ball in every play (C and QB).  My son is the CENTER and he touches the ball in every single offensive play except the long snap for a point after kick.  If he messes up and doesn't get the ball to the QB, he will deal with me (the mother) yelling at him.

Although football is not my favorite sport, I am certainly excited for this season of Hunter "Smash" Football!

It's time for football!

The HHS football season has officially begun!  Last night was the opening meeting/Polynesian bbq "Smash Night".  The new coach (3rd coach in 3 years) is a good man.  I can tell he loves the kids, the game, and winning (in that order).  I am excited for a great season.

In preparation for the football season, Willie had to have the annual "sports physical".  He went with Haley's support yesterday morning.  He is still in shock!  He called to report immediately afterwards: "Mom, they gave me a flyer on a new shot for STD's but that wasn't the worst part. I had to have an examination specifically for man parts . . . ."  Blush! Blush! Shock! Shock! To a young innocent 17 year old a little too violating?

Oh well, he woke up this morning his normal self and headed to the rec center to play basketball.  Although he's built more like an all state football player, basketball is his love!  But, we are so excited for football!  It should prove to be a great season.  If interested, follow the HHS Football website.

Couldn't be prouder . . .

As you start to organize a family -- marriage and then children -- your thoughts might be about how you want to get an education and a job that will take care of your family.  Once the children arrive your thoughts focus on them:
  • How you want to be the best parent ever
  • How much love your children and want to teach them and always be there for them
  • How you want the best for your children
  • How you want your children to be strong and smart and good looking
  • How you want them to be nice and honest and courteous and humble
  • How you want them to accept your beliefs about God and life and the good things that religion and gospel offer and then they can develop their own testimony of it all
  • How you want them to know about and act with faith, hope, and charity
  • How you want your children to be outgoing and positive and hard working and willing and able to take on any life challenge
  • How you want your children to take on challenges with confidence and courage and all of those other intrinsic values they have
  • How you want your children to experience disappointment and discouragement and see how they bring about new opportunities
  • How you want your children to learn about the importance of work and then work hard in everything
  • How you want your children to grow up with more than you had/have; with better education and opportunities and . . .
As I look at and think about my children every minute of every day I see that my some great miracle they are living examples of everything I (we) have wanted for them forever.  They are not perfect (nor are their parents) and there are times when I have to be a little stronger and opinionated with them than I'd like; but, it's because they are here by our choice and as gifts from God and they are mine (ours)! And, we all have things to learn and do and be; but how thankful I am for them and doggonit, I couldn't be prouder.

New to Me!

Have you ever used the word histrionic?  Well, it's a new vocabulary word for me.  A colleague described someone she knows as a little histrionic.  That means he is a little dramatic, theatrical, melodramatic, etc.  There is even a personality disorder referred to as HPD (histrionic personality disorder) characterized by excessive emotionality and attention-seeking.  Interesting . . .

Do you know what a box and whiskers plot is on a graph?  Well, I do now.  In reviewing some assessment data the other day, student growth was reported using a box and whiskers plot.  An example below -- looks like boxes with whiskers.

Practical Gifts

Yesterday I took Elliott to swimming lessons.  It was raining so I grabbed the big umbrella out of the garage -- Wyatt and I didn't want to sit in the rain while Elliott swam.  Mom gave the umbrella to me several years ago -- one of those practical Christmas gifts that came from VF Factory Outlet.

Today Annie and Haley and their kids and I went on a little picnic to Sugarhouse Park.  We took our stadium blankets to use as ground cover.  All were gifts from Mom/Grandma.  Annie and Haley have their names embroidered on their GAP blankets never to be mixed up (even though Haley has had Annie's for awhile).

I mended a pair of pants a few weeks ago using stuff from the best sewing kit I have (complete with all mending supplies).  It was a gift from Mom a year or so before she passed away.  It's a little red basket with an apple pin-cushion for the top.

Mom made sure we were well informed -- Reader's Digest, National Geographic, and National Geographic Kids were renewed annually.  Socks (3 pairs of white and 3 pairs of colored) were part of every Christmas gift because she didn't ever want us to wear darned or mended socks.  She also made sure we had coats and gloves and warm things to wear in winter.

While dejunking my house this past week I've stumbled on things Mom gave me and the kids over the years that are just so practical even today and mean so much more than they did then.

Thank you, Mom!

This son of mine . . .

Boy's State Friends (Viewmont, West, Monticello, Sambat (Hunter), Willie, and the kid on the left end who just stood in the picture)
Willie is a busy kid but this past month was the busiest I can remember for him.  He attended Boys State @ WSU the first week of June.  (That makes all Petersen children having attended this American Legion activity.)  Why go?  Well, you have to attend to get what it's all about -- it's about making new friends from all over the state; developing a greater appreciation for our country and those who serve in the military and in political office; learning from veterans themselves about their service and sacrifice; actually learning how government works, and more.  Boys State is not for the ADHD kids of the world because there is a lot of sitting.  All reports indicate that Willie had a great time and it was a really good experience.

Next came leadership camp @ USU.  Seven Hunter High SBOs and Mr. Klein (their advisor) spent 3 nights and 4 days learning how to lead students and engage them in school spirit.  This was so good for all of the kids who attended.  Willie knew some of the SBOs from other schools through athletics and Boys State.  The kids were kind of shocked to hear some of the comments (negative) about Hunter.  They were asked if they had seen a stabbing or kids with guns.  (West Valley just gets a bad rap in everything including student government.)  All in all, it was another great activity and learning event for Willie and the other kids who attended.

Finally, it was basketball camp @ Dixie!  I think it fills the "best kind of camp ever" for my son.  A dozen games played over the course of a week (10-2 record); hanging out in "the hotel" (private joke); and having Karl Dad as the coach made it a great week.  Willie loves basketball!  All of the kids had a blast!

So this son of mine now has football for the remainder of the summer.  He is working on an online class when I can get him to sit at the computer.  He tweets sometimes 4-5 times a day, and works a few hours a week @ Shavy Jones.  He is excited about everything and is the best son I'll ever have.

MKW

So if I had two more children, they would probably be named Meranda and Parker.  But, since that won't happen in this life I will just adopt my niece and nephew (Meranda and Parker) as additional children.

Today, I am so proud of Meranda.  She graduated for USU on May 5.  I attended the graduation and it was very nice.  Graduating from college is a pretty big deal; but what Meranda is planning to do next is amazing.  On June 27, she will be dropped off at the Salt Lake International Airport where she will join a few others and depart for the Buenos Aires, Argentina MTC.  Meranda is going to serve a mission in Paraguay!  She will learn Spanish in Argentina.

Yesterday was Meranda's time to speak in sacrament meeting.  Her talk was excellent and packed with enthusiasm.  In addition to Meranda's talk we got to hear from her mom!  (It was like listening to my mom 30 years ago -- precise and inspiring!)  There was also a special musical number and Parker was one of a double quartet.

Meranda will be an excellent missionary.  She will capture the attention of the South Americans with her beautiful hair.  All of the little children will want to touch it, I'm sure.

Visiting Graves is a Family Priority

So many families have loved ones who are buried in places outside their community and/or too far away to visit on Memorial Day.  Not so for many of our deceased family members.  There are too many to count and there are some graves we never visit.  But, for as long as I can remember visiting graves and decorating them with flowers on Memorial Day has long been a family thing.  My mom used to call Memorial Day "Decoration Day".  Interesting . . .   My own family, (Karl, Annie and her family, Haley and her family, and Willie and I), we make the rounds together on Sunday afternoon each year.  We go with the Huber family group on Monday.

At any rate, our visits take two days and here is the routine we generally follow:
Sunday
Valley View Cemetery  -- Ardith and Dewaine and Cousin Scott
Bluffdale -- Great grandparents Jones and Huber
American Fork  -- Grandparents Chipman and Uncle Bevan
Larkin Sandy -- Cousin Steve, Grandparents Petersen, and Friend Judy W.

Monday
Elysian Cemetery -- Grandparents Eccles
Wasatch Lawn -- Aunt Reve, Aunt Evelyn, Grandparents Huber, Uncle Glen, Uncle George, Great grandparents Meranda, my Mom, Uncle Blaine, Great grandparents Petersen
Mount Olivet -- Clara (Used to be Aunt and now 2nd Cousin)
Salt Lake City Cemetery -- Cousin David, Uncle "Dee"
Mount Calvery (SL City Cemetery) -- Great grandmother Mary Dwyer

So that's quite a few mums and some nice travel time.  It's a time to reminisce and think about those now gone from this life.  It's actually pretty peaceful and something to anticipate.

Happy Birthday, Annie

5-25-78

Another year older and wiser and all that jazz! Happy Birthday, daughter #1!

Elizabeth Ann (Annie) is a very good daughter (most of the time). Annie was born about 8:00 a.m. on a pleasant May morning. I have always called her the "golden granddaughter." She was the first granddaughter on both sides of the family and her grandmothers always and forever have had a special place in their hearts for her!

Annie is a planner, organized, and efficient. She is amazingly talented in artistic and domestic areas and in being a mom and a dedicated wife. I never know what she will do or say because she is highly opinionated. (In fact, all of my children are highly opinionated.) She loves her boys (including her husband and the big blond boy who lives with me). I love to watch her with her boys as she teaches them and loves them and helps them grow and develop. Little Molly is so cute when she calls out her name, "Hi Annie."

Happy Birthday, # 1 daughter of mine!

Moving Forward

Sometimes we (people of the world) get hung up on the events and things of the past that keep us from moving forward.  You know, the person who offends you and every time you see him/her; it ruins your day and then you let yourself think of all the people and experiences that have upset you; and, you let your thoughts ruin another day.  Well, I have been trying very hard not to do that.  I have been trying to keep my thoughts and actions "moving forward".  I have been snowplowing right through to the next opportunity the future presents.  And guess what, it works!  It feels better and helps me be more pleasant and get more things done.

(Snow plough is the metaphor here because it is a little stronger image that a plow a farmer uses.  I know you appreciate the explanation.)

Mother's Day

So, it's "mother's day"!  You know it well -- the day you get breakfast in bed and all that jazz.  Well, I haven't had breakfast in bed since my girls were very, very young.  And, to be honest it's not really something I would generally look forward to on this day or any day.

To me, every day is my day!  You see, I am lucky enough to be the mom to three amazing kids and they make just about every one of my days the best.  They are getting older and growing up to be pretty much more than I could have expected or anticipated.  They are smart, strong, healthy, beautiful/good looking, responsible, fun to be around, and a little kooky at times.  When we are all together, we laugh and giggle, and talk about crazy things, and it's all good.  I hope my kids know that I love them; that I feel so very blessed to be their mother; and, that I will try to be a good mom forever and always.

My role is ever changing!  By September, I will have two new grandchillins -- actually two new grandsons!  Haley will deliver a little one in June and Annie in September.  Grandmotherhood is basically indescribable, and it is genuinely a "grand" experience.

I think the best part of my "mother's day" is remembering my mom.  I think I can understand the whole celebration best when I think about Mom.  She was the miracle worker when it came to her role and function.  Juggling eight kids whose ages spanned nineteen years was no easy feat.  But she did it; and, she did it well.  Thinking of Mom brings tears to my eyes, warmth to my heart, and a tender images of her caring for me, my kids, my brothers and sisters, the grand kids, Dad, and really most everyone.  She will live forever in my thoughts and feelings.  I am proud to be her daughter and hopefully I can do justice to the seriousness with which she approached every day as a mother.  Happy Mother's Day!

Region Tennis

Willie and Eric @ Liberty Park
So, last spring Willie missed the Region II Tennis Tournament because he was trying to recover from a concussion sustained in a basketball game.  He couldn't think, focus, and had no energy.  I will never forget the symptoms.  Crazy!

This year was much different.  Not only did Willie make it to the Region II Tournament, but he and his doubles partner Eric took 3rd place in #1 Doubles.  Pretty cool!  All in all, the tennis team has had a great season!

The tournament was held at Liberty Park -- beautiful courts and seating for spectators.  The kids on the team are fortunate to have an excellent coach, Mr. Cummings.  He is efficient, organized, nice, and really cares about the kids.  He's one of those rare educators who kind of restores your faith in the education system.  We just need 71 other teachers just like him at the high school.

If you look closely at the photo, you will see Eric's eyes looking toward his mom's camera and Willie at mine.

(PS -- Parker took 2nd in JV #1 Doubles.)

Influence

I did my student teaching for French at Bonneville Junior High School.  My cooperating teacher was Mlle Kron.  She was amazing!  Beautiful, articulate, feisty, chic, endearing are only a few of her amazing qualities.  She taught me so much about teaching and kids and French language and French culture and more.  I do not hesitate in giving her well-deserved credit for the kind of teacher I am today.  She taught me how to look at a chapter or topic and make it come alive; to think outside of the box (if you will); to look beyond what is and think more of what can be.

While working at the Utah State Office of Ed, I was assigned to do a NW Accreditation visit to Bonneville JHS.  Very early on the morning of the accreditation visit, I walked into the school's media center and someone in the far corner called out my name!  It was Mlle Kron.  She was so excited to have me in her school; to tell all of the teachers there that she had trained me.  It was a powerful compliment!

Sad to report that Jean passed away early in April.  You can read her obituary (Jean Kron Crompton Falsone); she wrote it, of course!

The power of her influence is with me today in all aspects of my work.  Merci bien, Mlle Kron!

Friday the 13th -- Lucky Enough

For superstitious people like me, Friday the 13th is not one of those days you look forward to. There is always something weird and sometimes bad that happens to me on those days. However, this particular Friday the 13th was different from the beginning.

Karl and Willie managed to get up and out of the house on time for work and school without the "Mom" at home. Willie had a very nervous day anticipating the results of the SBO election at the high school. Karl had been nervous all week knowing he would be without a full staff in his department at work. I was 2500 miles away from home.

It's petty amazing that the events of the day were some of the best ever. Willie won the election -- President Petersen Hunter Wolverines! Karl got a raise and a bonus! And, I got notification at the meetings I attended in DC that Granite District will be one of 80 FAFSA Demonstration Project Schools -- announced by the US Department of Education.

The days leading up to today have been pretty stressful (but with good results) -- my sister Cindy had hip replacement surgery; my Dad celebrated birthday number 83 (he made it); gender of a new grand baby was determined; my sister Geneil had spinal/back surgery; potential complications of Haley's pregnancy were explained to me in more detail; crazy work schedule (new projects assignments); and house cleaning, cooking, and just taking care of stuff is always there. But, you know what, I made it through Friday the 13th with much to celebrate!

Happy Birthday, Haley Quinn

4-8-80

Haley was born on a Tuesday just after midnight. She has always been a very good daughter although in her toddler years she pinched me, bit me, and sometimes growled at me. As she grew up, I knew that she was going to be a very beautiful, smart, outgoing, meticulous adult. I love every stage my kids expereince, but for my daughters, I so enjoy watching them as mothers. Haley has her hands full with Molly and a new little one on the way, but she is taking it all in stride. Molly is always with her -- at ball games, shopping, cleaning the house, going to school, and more.

I am blessed to have two beautiful daughters, but today, Haley it is your day! Please know that you are loved, appreciated, and the best #2 daughter I will ever have.

Happy Birthday!

Tennis Tournament -- St. George Style

So we spent Friday and Saturday with the tennis team in St. George. The boys had matches at Hurricane High School, Desert Hills High School, and Pine View High School. Karl and I were the chauffeurs and the cheering section. We had a great time with the team and the coach. It was well-organized and just a lot of fun. I think I finally get tennis scoring after watching 5 matches of 5 -- singles 1, singles 2, singles 3, doubles 1, and doubles 2. Hunter HS placed 10th in a the 16 team tournament.

Random Thoughts

I thought of something to write about earlier today, but by the time I got to my computer it had been filed too deep in my memory to remember. So, I guess this will just be random.

Politics -- the Republicans annoy me and the Democrats disappoint me. I think maybe Huntsman is right and our country needs a third, fourth, maybe five political parties. Then, we would have variety in our political choices for President.

Religion -- I feel sad for the people in the world who are missing out on religion. I love my religion. I love the places I go to worship. I feel a warmth, a calmness, a feeling of love and hope when I go to places of worship. I think the feelings I get are affirmations that my religion is a good thing. I like the standards my religion sets for living my life. They are pretty basic and built on common sense. Some would argue that paying tithes and offerings aren't necessary for religious commitment. In my opinion, making such offerings is in a way showing my level of commitment to what I believe.

Teen pregnancy -- Why do teens get pregnant and think they are ready for rearing children. In this day of the year 2012, you'd think that young teens could figure it out. (Oh, wait a minute, teens get pregnant because they can't define abstinence and/or their parents don't want sex education included in their school experience. Thank you Utah State Legislature!) I get so sad when I see young kids bringing precious little ones into the world. Having spent may weeks counseling teen moms, I know that unless the moms are educated (high school and beyond), the little ones are likely to end up in the same circumstances as their moms (and dads).

Public school system -- I have only 15 month left with a child in the public education system. I will be so glad! I have spent my entire career in public education, and I am almost never surprised at its inefficiencies and lack of attention to inspiring and motivating and empowering young people. For example, my son has been a top of the GPA system for a long time. Around November, I asked the school people if he should be getting into Honor Society (looks good on scholarship applications). Well, my son got an application for Honor Society and it was dated 2003. So, I sent an email off to the school to see if there was a more recent application (a nearly ten year old xerox copy seemed odd). Well, I found out there was a new one, so I asked if my son could get a copy. He got three all in the same day and two of the three in the same class period (c o m m u n i c a t i o n?): one on his own; one from the counselor; and, one from someone who had it delivered with my son's names (first and last)spelled wrong on the paper. Next, we completed all of the fill in the blank, by hand, application (no writable pdf or online application) and submitted it to the teacher in charge. Well a few weeks have come and gone and my son finally got an acceptance letter (see below) -- impersonal, one-size-fits all form letter, not on letterhead, no date, no mention of my son's name, a punishment in the second paragraph, no induction ceremony or dinner, no certificate. So sorry to report, this is not unlike many other experiences at our public school. Arggg . . . Fifteen months and counting!

Basketball and my Kid #44

Well the excitement and enthusiasm that comes with playing in the State playoffs has come and gone. Left are the memories and the feelings and all that stuff. The first half of the playoff game was amazing. In typical Hunter basketball form, the team got down and made a hard-fought comeback to tie and go ahead. The second half was a downer. Bingham got a bunch of favorable calls (on Hunter that is) and their players went to the free throw line more times than equitable. However, that shouln't have kept the boys from winning. I have taught my kids that you can't leave the decision of a win up to an official. You have to play so well that regardless of the call(s), your team wins the game.

Bottom line -- it was cool for the team to go to the playoffs. Grandpa reminded Willie that not all kids make it to that level and he has in two sports this year with a third one on the way (tennis).

I am proud of the team but mostly the big blond kid who sports #44! In one of our earlier games this season, I overhead a coach from an opposing team say something like, ". . . that #44 for Hunter is the hardest working kid they have on the team . . ." Little did he know that kid he was talking about is my kid and that he is the hardest working kid in nearly everything he does.

What are you doing on your day off?

Willie and I are going to the dentist. It seems that when kids are busy in school, taking hard classes, not wanting to miss anything -- the only day to go to the dentist is on a day off. So, today is President's Day and a day off for schools and school worker people, so we will be at the dentist office this afternoon. No cavities or anything like that. Willie needs some bonding done on a chipped tooth and I have a little growth in my mouth that need to be removed. Nothing complicated.

Other than that we will just be chillin' the "day off" away. Willie had practice at 7:00 a.m., then got a "free" haircut at Great Clips with his U of U basketball ticket. I just talked to Haley and she is headed to Great Harvest to get a "buy one get one free" deal on bread.

I could do some things around the house or other stuff, but I am really not that interested.

Hope all of you blog readers have a great day!

Lettermen, Letterman

Not David Letterman or the "Lettermen" but . . . Willie the Hunter HS student athlete with a Lettermen's Jacket!

A letterman is a high school or college student who has met a specified level of participation or performance on a varsity athletic team, marching band, or in other performance school-sponsored activities.

A letterman jacket is a jacket traditionally worn by high school and college students in the United States to represent school and team pride as well as to display personal awards earned in athletics, academics or activities. Letterman jackets are also known as "varsity jackets" in some places.

Letterman jackets are almost never purchased before a student has earned a letter. In schools where only varsity letters are awarded this is usually in a students' junior or senior year. In schools where junior varsity letters are awarded, the jacket may also be purchased by junior varsity letter recipients, though the letter is placed just above the left pocket, leaving space for a (hopefully) future varsity letter.

For Willie, it's the first item of clothing he has ever (yes I mean ever) hung up on his own! Congrats Willie!

How many hours of basketball can you watch in a week?

Well the week started off with basketball, basketball, and more basketball. Yes, we watch all of the televised JAZZ games we can and all of the college games of interest. But my favorite basketball is at the high school level. This week Willie had a tripple-de-dipple varsity game on Wednesday with the usual JV game just before. I watch high school basketball from 5:15 p.m. or so until 9:20 p.m. or so. Thursday's evening activity included a U of U vs. U of AZ game at the Huntsman Center that included about one hour of good basketball and one hour of terrible Utah basketball. Friday night it was basketball back to the high school; again, JV and varsity and this time we got two wins! Saturday afternoon, back at the Huntsman Center, we watch Utah vs. ASU. It was the best basketball a Utah team has played in the Huntsman Center for more than 3 years!

I love basketball! I have never been any good at playing it (or any other sport), but I love watching my favorite player "Will the Thrill" and any others that I so choose. It's how I spend a good part of my free time from November through June. Yes!
